More Than Mahjong: The Community We Never Expected

Sometimes the best adventures begin with a single, simple decision.

Three years ago, I made a list of things I wanted to try in 2023. One of those things was learning Mahjong. Never in a million years could I have imagined where that one decision would lead or how much it would enrich my life. Last night, Mahjong Social Club Jax welcomed 24 incredible women for an Open Play that happened to fall on both National Pink Day and International Mahjong Day. Seeing everyone dressed in pink, (my favorite color!) gathered around pink Mahjong tables, sipping pink drinks, laughing, learning, and connecting was truly surreal. As someone said during the evening, "All the stars have aligned." It certainly felt that way.

What started as a hobby has grown into something so much bigger. Angie, Delaney, and I absolutely love the game of Mahjong, but what fills our hearts most is the community that has formed around it. We've had the privilege of meeting so many remarkable women, hearing their stories, celebrating milestones together, and watching complete strangers become genuine friends.

One of my favorite moments has been watching these friendships continue beyond our events. Women are exchanging numbers, creating group chats, meeting for games on their own, and building the kind of community we always dreamed Mahjong could inspire. My Daughter, Delaney, who is our Social Media Coordinator, even told Angie and me that she hoped Mahjong would help her find the kind of close-knit friend group that we've been fortunate to experience ourselves. Seeing that happen has been incredibly rewarding.

Mahjong is more than a game to us, it's a community.  From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for choosing to play with us, for trusting us to teach you, and for helping build this amazing community. Angie said it perfectly: "Mahjong has changed our lives." It truly has.
